Cuomo’s Eviction Moratorium Went Too Far, Landlords Say

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo overstepped his authority when issuing a 60-day moratorium on evictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the governor’s order denies landlords their contractual right to court, a lawyer representing landlords challenging the order told a federal judge on June 24th.

According to Black Knight, a mortgage data company, 4.3 million homeowners didn’t pay their mortgage in May, which is up from just 2 million in March. That 4.3 million represents 8% of all mortgages, and it’s the highest number of delinquencies since 2011.

Single-family renters continue to be current with their June rent payments, according to a nationwide survey released today by the National Association of Residential Property Managers.

Applicant fraud has risen 9% month-over-month since the pandemic, with some inflating their income to qualify for rental or disguising the source of their income.

Property managers must abide by strict rules when using common reports to determine the eligibility of prospective renters. Make sure you know what you can and can’t do with the information.
